Environment, Parks
Ellsworth Cemetery Fund

Ellsworth Cemetery was created on December 21, 1876, when six Black United States Army Veterans filed Maryland Articles of Incorporation to provide a burial place “for the Colored residents of Westminster, Maryland”. Reuben Walker, David Ireland, William Massey, William Adams, Lewis Dorsey and Samuel Bowens were the six founders. At the time, local laws prohibited the burying of African Americans within the city limits of Westminster. Therefore, this cemetery was located just outside the incorporated city limits of that time. Funds will be used to maintain the cemetery (mowing and landscaping), repair headstones, support research and provide community outreach. Members of the Advisory Committee are all unpaid volunteers.

Historic Preservation
Emily Burke Memorial Fund

The purpose of the Emily Burke Memorial Fund is to honor the life of Emily M. Burke by providing financial support to those institutions and activities that were important to her. These institutions and activities may change with time and need. Changes will be made at the discretion of the Foundation, but donors reserve the right to suggest changes based on changed circumstances or emerging needs in the community. Examples of fund recipients or activities may include, but are not limited to, these areas: Maintenance or improvements of the Athletic and Instrumental Music Facilities at Liberty High School; Provision of athletic uniforms or instrumental-music equipment for students in need; Maintenance or improvements of athletic facilities at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Eldersburg, MD; Funding for youth retreats or for needy students to attend retreats at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Eldersburg, MD; An annual Girls Fast Pitch Softball Tournament in the Eldersburg, MD area; An award made to one or more students at Liberty High School who have shown remarkable character in service to others; and funds may be used to finance programs that inspire a love of reading. We believe that reading equals better education, which leads to life opportunities.
